Overview
Al Bayt is the 2022 venue farthest from central Doha and the second largest of the eight: a vast striped tent on the southern side of Al Khor, a coastal town up the north-east coast. Its tournament layout seated about 68,900 people. On 20 November 2022 it staged the opening match, in which Ecuador beat the hosts 2–0, and it went on to host a quarter-final and a semi-final.
The name means "the house" or "the home" in Arabic, and it points straight at the design. A bayt al sha'ar, literally a "house of hair", is the black tent traditionally woven from goat hair and used by the nomadic peoples of Qatar and the wider Gulf. Getting there takes more planning than any other stadium in this guide, because there is no metro line to Al Khor, but the trip up the coast is part of the appeal.
Al Khor and the setting
Al Khor grew up around a sheltered inlet on the north-east coast, and fishing and pearling shaped its past. Today it is a quieter, lower-rise place than the capital, with a corniche along the water and a harbour where fishing boats still tie up. Depending on the source and where you measure from, it lies roughly 35 to 45 km north of central Doha, and the drive along the Al Khor Coastal Road usually takes 45 minutes to an hour.
The stadium stands apart from the town centre in a large landscaped park, which was due to open to the public in early 2020, well before the tournament. Reports from the tournament period described paths for walking, running and cycling, and even riding tracks. Al Khor SC, the local club, has played its home games here since 2022.
The tent, inside and out
The design is credited to the engineering and design firm Dar Al-Handasah, although some sources also name a German architecture practice, so credits vary. The idea behind it is clear. Families in Qatar's nomadic past could be recognised by the black stripes on the outside of their tents and the red sadu weaving that lined the inside. The stadium translates both. Outside, a huge membrane carries bold black-and-white stripes with touches of red. Inside, red dominates the stands, and some of the seats are arranged to form sadu-style geometric patterns.
The "tent" is a skin stretched over a steel frame, and its overhanging edges shade the approaches. The upper tier was designed as a removable layer, so part of what you see was meant as a temporary tournament set-up.
Big matches
Al Bayt opened on 30 November 2021 with the first match of the Arab Cup, a 1–0 win for Qatar over Bahrain, and closed that tournament by hosting its final, in which Algeria beat Tunisia 2–0 after extra time. A year later it held nine World Cup matches. Beyond the opening game, they included England's goalless draw with the United States, England's quarter-final defeat by France, and France's 2–0 semi-final win over Morocco on 14 December 2022.
The stadium has stayed on the big-tournament circuit since. It hosted four matches at the 2023 Asian Cup in early 2024, including Qatar's quarter-final penalty shoot-out win over Uzbekistan, and seven at the 2025 Arab Cup, including Jordan's 1–0 semi-final win over Saudi Arabia.
Roof, cooling and sustainability
Al Bayt has a retractable roof that can cover the whole bowl. Under it, the stadium uses the same cooling approach as most of the 2022 venues: chilled air from pitch-side outlets and small diffusers beneath the seats, drawn back, filtered and cooled again. The tent's deep overhangs shade the stands and help the system work less hard.
The organisers presented the removable upper tier as the main sustainability feature, since the seats could be reused rather than left empty. As with the tournament's wider environmental claims, read the official figures with some caution.
Legacy after 2022
Before the tournament, the plan was to remove the upper tier and bring capacity down to about 32,000. The seats were to be donated to sports projects abroad. Pre-tournament reports said the freed space would hold a hotel, shops and sports and health facilities for the Al Khor community. We have not found recent, reliable reporting that confirms how far that conversion has gone, and the stadium kept hosting large tournament crowds in 2024 and 2025.
Treat the 2022 figure of about 68,900 as history rather than a current count, and check the event organiser's information for the layout on the day.
Getting there
There is no metro station in Al Khor, so every trip involves the road. During the 2022 World Cup, shuttle buses ran from Lusail station at the northern end of the Red Line, about half an hour each way, and express coaches ran from central Doha. Our Getting Around guide explains the wider network.
How to get there
-
For a big event, check for Red line shuttles
Look for official shuttle announcements before match day. For an ordinary league game, do not count on one.
-
Otherwise go by Road: car or taxi
Head north on the Al Khor Coastal Road. Allow 45 minutes to an hour from central Doha, and more on event days, when traffic builds well before kick-off.
-
Walk the last stretch
Shuttle stops, car parks and taxi zones sit around the park, not at the gates. In 2022 some drop-off points were a walk of 20 minutes or more from the stadium.
Event-day arrangements change. Check the venue's and the organiser's current transport information before you travel.
Around the stadium
If you are making the trip north, give Al Khor itself an hour or two. The corniche and the harbour are pleasant in the late afternoon, when the boats come back in and the light softens. Just across the bay lies Al Khor Island, often called Purple Island, with mangroves along its shores. Archaeologists have found evidence there of a purple-dye industry dating to around 1400 to 1100 BC. Access arrangements can change, so check locally before you go.
Further afield, Al Zubarah, Qatar's UNESCO World Heritage Site on the north-west coast, is a separate excursion rather than a detour. Our sights guide covers it alongside the museums and districts of Doha.
Visiting tips
Treat a visit to Al Bayt as a half-day trip, not a quick hop. Leave Doha with time to spare, especially on an event day. On non-event days the area right next to the stadium has few facilities, while Al Khor town has places to eat. The comfortable season runs roughly from November to March; outside it, plan time in the park for early morning or after sunset. For the routine of a match day, see our Matchday Guide.
- Your match ticket on a charged phone, plus a power bank
- Plenty of water for the road and the walk from the car park
- Comfortable shoes: distances around the park are long
- A light layer for the cooled bowl and cooler winter evenings
- A plan for getting home if you miss the last shuttle
Check before you set off
Opening hours, entry rules and timetables change, so check the official venue or operator information before you visit. It matters more here than anywhere, because there is no metro if a shuttle is not running.
FAQ
Can I get to Al Bayt Stadium by metro?
Not directly. The nearest metro station is Lusail, at the northern end of the Red Line, still a good distance away. On big match days shuttle buses have linked it with the stadium; otherwise you will need a car or a taxi.
How long does the journey from Doha take?
Usually 45 minutes to an hour by road from central Doha, longer on event days, plus the walk to the gates.
What does "Al Bayt" mean?
It means "the house" or "the home". The stadium is modelled on the bayt al sha'ar, the black hair tent of the region's nomadic peoples, with its striped exterior and red woven interior.
Does the stadium still have about 68,900 seats?
That was the 2022 tournament layout. A reduction to about 32,000 was planned, but we could not confirm its current status, so check the event information for the configuration on the day.
